Glovers take home Cy Young (Edwards) and MVP (M. Vaughn)

In the 11th annual MicroLeague awards, it was a Golden Glovers seep as Carl Edwards won the Cy Young Award and Mo Vaughn took home MVP honors.

In the closest MVP voting in league history, Mo Vaughn edged teammate Luis Gonzalez and Chunky Monkey’s Babe Ruth by one vote. Vaughn finished fifth in the league in batting average (.316), third in home runs (25) and fifth in RBI (69). He was the only player in the league to finish in the top 5 in average, HR and RBI.

The Glovers’ Luis Gonzalez and Babe Ruth tied for second and each had a first-place vote. Ruth was fourth on one ballot, costing him potentially a co-MVP.

Meanwhile, Edwards became the second reliever to win the award (Dan Quisenberry was the other) as he finished first in ERA (1.10), first in strikeouts (128), second in WHIP (0.918) and was 8-0. It was the second-most innings by a reliever with 98. Bobby Jenks from the Flash finished second.

Game 82: Downing, Vaughn go back-to-back to lead Flash 7-6

Flash have two-game lead with two to go

Brian Downing hit a three-run home run off Ramon Martinez to tie the game, followed by Greg Vaughn’s solo home run off Jonathan Broxton on the next pitch to lead the Fort Lauderdale Flash over the Chunky Monkey 7-6.

The Flash are now one win away from the making the World Series and at worst would be in a one-game playoff.

vaughn

I’ve lost count how many one-run losses that is for the Monkey or how many bullpen losses that is, but both numbers are close to 20. Bobby Jenks picked up the win in relief, going 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball, while Broxon again takes the loss.

Miguel Cabrera had two hits and two RBI for the Flash, while Bradon Anderson and B.J. Upton each had two hits and two RBI for the Monkey.

In the other game, Kevin Maas hit two home runs with four RBI, while Carl Edwards made his case for the Cy Young award by pitching 7 2/3 innings of one-hit ball with 10 strikeouts to lead the Golden Glovers past the Rolling Thunder 8-7.

Luis Gonzalez added three hits and a RBI in the win. Chipper Jones had a three-run home run for the Thunder.

Monkey remain one-game back

Oh that pesky bullpen.

Jonathan Broxton

Joe Mauer hit a bases-loaded clearing double in the top of the 8th off of Jonathan Broxton to lead the Rolling Thunder past the Chunky Monkey 9-6.

Hack Wilson added two hits and a home run, while Charlie Kerfeld got the win in relief, pitching 2 2/3 innings.

The Monkey got what it wanted, racing out to a 3-0 lead as Rick Ankiel couldn’t make it out of the third inning.

Mel Ott was 3 for 5 with three RBI, while Ernie Lombardi had four hits and a RBI.
