Game 22: Carew, Martinez each hit HRs as Monkey edge Flash

Thunder edge Glovers 6-4

Sometimes all you need is two hits.

Rod Carew and Victor Martinez each had home runs to lead the Chunky Monkey past the Fort Lauderdale Flash 3-2.

Andy Messersmith got the win, pitching 6 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts, while Lee Smith picked up the save. Jim Palmer allowed just two hits, but ended up taking the loss.

In the other game, D.J. LeMahieu and Cookie Rojas each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Rolling Thunder past the Golden Glovers 6-4.

Neftali Feliz got the win in relief of Mr. Geek, who didn’t allow an earned run in six innings. Goose Goslin was 3 for 5 with two home runs and three RBI in the loss.
