Awards: Bautista wins MVP; Lidge first reliever to win Cy Young

In the sixth annual league awards, the Thunder’s Jose Bautista edged out Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco to win his first MVP award.

Bautista ended the season hitting .307 (6th) with 28 home runs (2nd) and 61 RBI (6th), being the only player in the league in the Top 7 of AVG, HR and RBI.

The Monkey’s Brad Lidge claimed the Cy Young Award becoming the first reliever to do so. In a season where only one starter had an ERA under 3.00, Lidge set the standard with a 1.72 ERA in 68 innings, allowing just 37 hits and 20 walks (0.735 WHIP) with 112 strikeouts and a league-leading nine saves.
