Piazza claims MVP; Maddux wins third straight Cy Young

In the fourth annual league awards, the Thunder’s Mike Piazza took home his first MVP award, while the Flash’s Greg Maddux was an unanimous decision for his third consecutive Cy Young.

Piazza ended up with a .346 average (3rd in league), 30 HRs (2nd) with 84 RBI (4th) and received three of the four first-place votes. Larry Walker and Alex Rodriguez finished tied for second, while Ken Griffey was fourth.

Maddux earned his third Cy Young, and second unanimously over Randy Johnson. Maddux finished 12-3 with a 2.09 ERA with 11 complete games. He also had 97 strikeouts and just 13 walks, compiling a 0.864 WHIP
